Memorial tenure and lease extensions

As part of ensuring our cemeteries remain cared for and sustainable for future generations, interment rights are granted for a set period of time. When this tenure is approaching its expiry, families have the option to extend the right of interment.

Extending the tenure allows families to continue to maintain their existing site for future use, visitation, or memorialisation. We will contact the interment right holder (or their nominated contact) well before the tenure expires to provide information and guidance about the renewal process. Our team is here to assist with all aspects of tenure extensions — from explaining available timeframes to arranging payment and updating records.

If you would like to check the tenure status of your site or discuss an extension, please contact us and we’ll be happy to help.

Tenures and lease extensions

As a site’s tenure approaches expiry, families can choose to extend it, surrender it back to the Trust and then explore one of our perpetual memorial options. Each choice offers a respectful way to ensure your loved one’s memory continues to be honoured.

Extending your current memorial

At Payneham and Dudley Park Cemeteries, we offer the opportunity to extend the tenure of your site in five-year increments, providing flexibility and peace of mind for the future. Cremation and lawn sites can be extended for up to 50 active years, while vaults may be extended for up to 99 years. Extending your tenure means your site remains active and maintained, allowing continued visits, memorialisation, and a lasting place of reflection for family and friends. Our team is here to guide you through the process and help you choose an extension period that best suits your needs. If your site’s tenure is nearing expiry—or if you simply wish to add further tenure—we invite you to contact us to discuss your options.

Surrendering the Plot

If you no longer require your plot, you are welcome to surrender it back into the care of the Payneham and Dudley Park Cemeteries Trust. Once returned, the site can eventually be reused by another family, with any existing interments respectfully lowered further into the site and all records carefully maintained for future generations. Any monuments or personal items can be collected before the surrender is finalised. To begin this process, please contact our office to request a Surrender Form.

Perpetual memorial alternatives

Our perpetual memorial areas at Payneham and Dudley Park Cemeteries offer a lasting place of remembrance without the ongoing responsibilities of a traditional burial or cremation site. These special spaces are cared for in perpetuity, providing peace of mind for families who wish to honour their loved ones in a beautiful, low-maintenance setting. Perpetual memorials are also a thoughtful option for those who have moved away from their family's burial site but wish to establish a nearby place of reflection. Each memorial can be personalised to reflect the life and memory of your loved one. To learn more about our perpetual memorial options, please contact our team — we're here to help you choose a lasting tribute that feels right for your family.

Steps to renew your memorial

To renew the tenure of your site, the first step is to confirm how many active years remain. Lawn and cremation sites can be renewed up to a maximum of 50 active years, while vaults can hold up to 99. Once you know the remaining balance, simply choose how many years you would like to add. You will then receive a Renewal Form and an invoice; both the completed form and payment are required to finalise the extension. If you need help at any stage, our team is here to support you.

Check your tenure expiry date

To check the expiry date of your tenure, simply locate your site and the current tenure information will be displayed there. If you need help finding or confirming any details, our team is always here to assist.
